Vault-Tec engineers have worked around the clock on an interactive reproduction of Wasteland life for you to enjoy from the comfort of your own vault. Included is an expansive world, unique combat, shockingly realistic visuals, tons of player choice, and an incredible cast of dynamic characters. Every minute is a fight for survival against the terrors of the outside world – radiation, Super Mutants, and hostile mutated creatures. From Vault-Tec, America’s First Choice in Post Nuclear Simulation.
Periodically saves the game in rotating slots, but not when its risky or annoying.
SafeAutoSave is a Fallout 3 mod that periodically saves the game in rotating slots, but not during conditions that may lead to crashes or annoying pauses. It’s extremely light on resources and it doesn’t save unless the following conditions are met:
By holding down the Num+ key your autosave will be expedited, ignoring the first two conditions. This is a better way to quicksave as it will use the rotating system. There’s a cooldown period to avoid accidental save spamming.
To provide a reliable save history, the rotation counter isn’t stored on the save but rather on the config file. This means it applies globally and therefore the oldest slot will always be overwritten regardless of which save was loaded.
Autosaves appear with the AUTO prefix and they do not affect the game’s manual save counter.
SafeAutoSave disables the game’s internal autosaving that has been reported as unreliable. I can’t confirm these reports, but I sure find it annoying to be getting a save notification whenever I open a front door.
SafeAutoSave requires Stewie’s Command Extender for Fallout 3. Load order doesn’t matter, so it’s best to load it as early as possible.
To configure SafeAutoSave, simply edit the Data\Config\ SafeAutoSave.ini file according to its own instructions. The iExpediteAutoSaveKey setting is based on the following map:

This mod was created from scratch, but was also inspired by Simple Saves by PushTheWinButton. Many thanks to the authors of FOSE and to Luthien Anarion for the original INI functions in Lutana. Special thanks to Stewie for his attention to Fallout 3.
