Soul of Azores is a game where you are an explorer that was sent to the Azores islands to find, research and photograph the newly discovered dark corals in the mid-oceanic ridge, and during your adventure you start gathering new informations regarding the life under that warm sea. Just you, a camera and maybe some jellyfish trying to get to you, try to succeed and continue on with your mission to deliver good reports and researches.

Devlog #3 – What we have!

Hi everyone, hope you are doing well! We are back with an update on how's it going for our game! We were able to advance a bit more this week, also, since we have a delivery upcoming we are gathering up all the missed details and putting everything on its place! Again, we are able to bring you more visuals for the game.

Artwise…

So for this week, the artist decided to work on the game's logo and interface, due to the deadline getting closer and him being a bit stuck on the sketches and detailed sketches. So we can show you some studies he made for the logo, as said — Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure 3 —, in which he started by gathering a few sketches for it about the main theme and developed a bit. Although, he was firstly inclined to keep the azores mosaic aesthetic, he ended up changing his mind as there would be a slight conflict because of it, since there wouldn't be any mosaics underwater and would look a bit more fantasy-like, which is not the case for our game!

Also, for the interface — Figure 4 —, he was really excited to follow his inspiration (main inspiration), which is Hollow Knight, and ended up making a few changes to the original idea he had, due to some feedback from the professors.

Regarding Programming…

This week, our programmer made the new camera (puzzle) mechanic, we are still debating and testing which one would be better for our circle camera in the future, however, this is the newest one that she was able to make — just a side note that this version we are showing you, won't have the interface on top of it yet, so it's a square, but in the other versions it will be round —, so — GIF 1 —.

Also, she was able to make the whitebox for the level — Figure 5 —, as it says, it's a whitebox, so it's basically just white boxes around with the actual size of the objects that we will have in the game, not only that we have just a placeholder background for now, which is one of our artists thumbnails.

Game Design…

As for game design, throughout the week, I was mainly focused on making our report for the upcoming delivery, and also made some adjustments and worked my way through the guidelines, to make sure I had everything. I can show you also, our Spec-Sheet, which our artist did the background for it and I went over it and wrote all of our game details about it, which you can see below — Figure 6 —.

Not only that, I re-made our Retention Loop — a side note: the one we posted about was a Gameplay Loop, we didn't remake that one! — and we made it simple, but that could be enjoyed multiple times — Figure 7 —.

I also finished making the ingredients for our game, they are a significant number, so to show it here would be a lot, but I will put here some of them — Figure 8, Figure 9, Figure 10 —! There are more besides this ones, namely: Algaes, Anemones, Rocky Formations (2), Bubbles, Other random species, Rocks (for the background), Squid and Octopus.

To end, I also made our Pre-Business Plan, which is an idea of what we would have as expenses and gains if we had a studio and how much it would cost. It was an estimate of how much, and I had some help from the professor to understand it better and distribute it wisely. I adjusted some things in the report, and now I'm still working on completing it for the upcoming delivery!

Thank you!

For now, this is it, we hope you are as excited as we are to make a game out of this hard work, and to show you guys what we were able to construct! Hope to see you again in next week's update, and hopefully with some more news to show you! :D Have a great week(end)!
