It's not that bad, jump in using the fan patch.
Wow, one has to wonder what exactly was Romero smoking when he thought having toy robot frogs and dragon-flies as the first enemies in the game was a sure way to blow people's minds off; or to put it more accurately, to make everyone become his bitch đđ
Just got the GOG version; time to find out if the game truly lives up to its abysmal reputation, lol.
Romero certainly made some extremely questionable design choices when creating this, but the game is not without some redeeming qualities. The biggest problem of the game is its absolutely horrendous 1st episode (right down to every single thing about it) and the dubious decision to include AI teammates in the gameplay. Johnny-boy should have left them to appear only in cutscenes, but as usual - he thought he was god, so he did the opposite of what makes sense...
However, if you manage to play through that episode (or suffer through it, lol) or use some cheat code to directly skip it -
then you arrive at the Ancient Greek episode and later the Medieval episode, - both of which are fantastic. Especially the Greek one! Beautiful top-notch levels with marvelously befitting heroic soundtrack by Will Loconto - literally makes pages of mythology come to life before your eyes. Lovely fire effects and atmosphere in spades. The fun continues with the Medieval episode, although on a somewhat lesser scale. The weapons could've been better, sure - and so could the titular blade, but that's about the only gripe i have. Considering that there is next to zero competition regarding FPS games in the Greek Mythos theme - this part of the game is very competent. Not perfect, but far from anything to sneer at.
Of course, if those themes are not your cup of tea, then the game is completely and utterly useless. But if you happen to like them as i do, then even half-a-game is better than nothing. Especially a well-made half-a-game.
Wow, ZERO mods?!? In these days of remixes, remasters, reloads and overhauls, I'm surprised that Daikatana doesn't have one while it's one of the games that would benefit the most from it. I've just reinstalled it yesterday, I had forgotten how ugly it is...
There's not even one single custom map while there's a map editor! WTF?
There are but you mainly have to get the stuff from elsewhere. I agree with you though that it probably would be a wise move to add the stuff into this site aswell.
Got this game during it's prime and boy it does suck hard way back then. Now tnx to that fan made patch 1.3 things got much better, no more crappy ticking loading screen where each bullet on the clip clicks like nuts, now it loads really fast without that and so far I'm enjoying the single player for the very first time on wide screen to.
Great ID tech 2 game. Really oldschool. Great play! download here
